Rough night for AP Top 25 schools as #4 North Carolina Tar heels, #6 Texas A&M Aggies and #20 Kentucky Wildcats fall.
Zabian Dowdell scored 33 points and Deron Washington had 12 points and 14 rebounds as the Virginia Tech Hokies (18-7) upset the #4 North Carolina Tar Heels (22-4) 81-80 in overtime. Tyler Hansbrough led the Tar Heels with 22 points and 8 rebounds but North Carolina shot just 17 percent from beyond the three-point line. The win pushed the Hokies to 8-3 in the ACC, tied with the Tar Heels for second place. Both schools are one game behind Boston College.
Jarrius Jackson hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lift the Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-10) past the #6 Texas A&M Aggies (21-4) 77-75. Jackson finished with 31 points on the night while Martin Zeno added 19 points and 6 assists. The Red Raiders hit 46 percent of their three-point attempts and made 83 percent of their free-throws. The Aggies struggled from the foul-line, converting just 70 percent of their attempts. The loss dropped A&M to 9-2 in the Big-12, a half game ahead of the Kansas Jayhawks. Texas Tech improved to 5-6 in conference play.
Mike Green scored 24 points and grabbed 6 rebounds while AJ Graves added 22 points as the #13 Butler Bulldogs (24-3) beat Florida Gulf Coast U 79-65. Brandon Crone scored 11 points and had 8 rebounds in the game. The win was the 22nd straight home victory for the Bulldogs.
Randal Falker scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to power the #16 Southern Illinois Salukis (22-5) past the Missouri State Bears (19-8) 51-47. Jamaal Tatum added 16 points for the Salukis who won despite shooting just 32 percent from the field. Southern Illinois is atop the MVC with a 13-3 record while the loss dropped the Bears to 10-6 in the conference.
Chris Lofton scored 23 points and Duke Crews added 18 more as the Tennessee Volunteers (18-8) beat the #20 Kentucky Wildcats (18-7) 89-85. While the Wildcats seemed to dominate most areas of the game it was their unforced errors that proved to be their undoing. They committed 19 turnovers in the game compared to 8 for Tennessee. Joe Crawford led the Wildcats with 24 points while Randolph Morris finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Tennessee improved to 6-5 in the SEC East while Kentucky dropped to 7-4.
