A massive rally in Spain’s capital of Madrid has been organized to protest plans by Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero to liberalize the country’s abortion laws.
With organizers hoping that more than one million people from across the primarily Catholic country would participate, the goal of the protestors is to block the introduction of abortion on demand.
Zapatero and his socialist government have been pushing a more liberal agenda and have targeted the current abortion laws as their new focus. Having already legalized gay marriage and made divorce easier Zapatero now wants the current abortion laws to be modified.
Currently in Spain an abortion can only be carried out under specific circumstances such as rape and abnormalities in the fetus. According to a draft law now in parliament the law would be changed, allowing abortion on demand for pregnancies within the first 14 weeks.
The new law would also allow girls aged 16 and 17 to get an abortion without parental consent.
The government has argued that new abortion laws would include counseling women about the alternatives to abortion which would include state assistance.
