Talks in Honduras Suspended as Ousted Leader Manuel Zelaya Calls Latest Proposal “Disrespectful”

The hopes for a resolution to the political crisis in Honduras appear to be waning despite reports earlier this week that the two sides were close to a deal.

Ousted President Manuel Zelaya called the most recent proposal from the interim government “disrespectful” and said the talks were now suspended. Forced out of the country in June, Zelaya has insisted that he be returned to office to serve out the remainder of his term. While the government hasn’t ruled out his return to office they have said that decision should be made in a vote by legislators.

Interim leader Roberto Micheletti has said Zelaya has no authority in Honduras and was legally removed from office on June 28 after he violated the country’s constitution. That assertion has been backed by the Supreme Court yet the move was heavily criticized by the international community.

Zelaya managed to slip back into Honduras in September and has been holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. The interim government eventually agreed to an open dialogue in an attempt to solve the crisis but the most recent solution offered by the interim government only angered Zelaya.

Speaking from the Brazilian embassy in Honduras, Mr Zelaya said the proposal to allow legislators to vote on his future was "the dialogue is suspended due to this unilateral and practically disrespectful offer from them, which we consider to be just another mocking, dismissive act against the Honduran people and the international community.”

According to the interim government Zelaya violated the country’s constitution when he attempted to hold a vote on the possibility of rewriting the charter. Micheletti has accused Zelaya of trying to change that constitution so that he could stand in the upcoming elections despite the expiration of his term limit.
