Spend President's Day Weekend in One of Our Nation's Best Historic Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns

Travelers and history enthusiasts can walk in the steps of US Presidents. Spend the upcoming Presidents’ Day Holiday planning a weekend getaway to one of our Nations Best Historic Bed and Breakfast and Country Inns.

February 14, 2007 -- American Historic Inns, Inc., publisher of more than 2.5 million bed & breakfast guidebooks, and companion Web site www.iLoveInns.com highlights 12 Inns where past presidents once dined, danced or dreamed.

The term Presidents' Day began its public appearance in the late 1980’s and the theme has expanded the focus of the holiday to honor not only George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but often other presidents of the United States as well. Travelers and history enthusiasts can walk in the steps of presidents such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant and many more by staying in the nation’s historic bed & breakfasts or country inns.

Historic guests such as these and others add to the many characteristics that make the whole bed & breakfast experience so unique, especially because 90 percent of B&Bs and inns are in historic properties.

Much of our nation’s history is preserved at inns and bed & breakfasts, so it’s no surprise to find that guests staying at the opulent John Rutledge House Inn in Charleston, S.C., will enjoy not only the story of George Washington dining there, but also that the first drafts of the U.S. Constitution were drawn up in the mansion’s ballroom. The home’s builder, John Rutledge, was no slouch himself in the context of American history. Rutledge was a writer and signer of the Constitution, and served as South Carolina’s first governor and was a Supreme Court Justice. Across the street is Charleston’s Governors House, where John’s brother Edward lived. Edward Rutledge was a representative to the First Continental Congress in 1775 and the youngest person to ratify and sign the Declaration of Independence a year later.

George Washington: The Creekside Inn in Paradise, Penn., boasts a visit from George Washington who was investigating a mill across the street from the inn owned by Washington’s friends David and Esther Witmer. Other inns claiming Washington’s blessing are the Bird and Bottle in Garrison, New York and Jacob’s Resting Place in Carlisle, Penn. Another George, our 43rd President, stayed overnight at the 1877 House Country Inn in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The White House travel office decided on the inn because of its good location and because its seclusion made it easy to secure.

Lincoln, Grant and Others: Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses Grant were guests at the Aldrich Guest House located in Galena, Illinois, an elegant Greek Revival home, filled with Victorian antiques. Guests here can immerse themselves in the nostalgic past, and also enjoy the best of today’s lodging amenities as wells as art galleries, hiking, live theater and shopping. Many historic hotels, bed & breakfasts and country inns are worthy of a Presidents’ Day holiday get-a-way and offer a great way to enjoy history greats like Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant and many more.

Whether its Presidents' Day or another quick getaway, there is nothing to compare to the unique, experience-based getaways provided by America’s more than 15,000 historic bed and breakfasts and country inns.
