Colt McCoy was 21/39 passing for 127 yards and a touchdown and added 33 yards on the ground, Foswhitt Whittaker had 71 yards receiving and the #3 Texas Longhorns (6-0, 3-0) defense forced five turnovers in a 16-13 victory over the #20 Oklahoma Sooners (3-3, 1-1) in Big 12 action on Saturday.
Oklahoma was handed a devastating blow early in the first half as junior quarterback Sam Bradford reinjured his throwing shoulder and was knocked out of the game but the Sooners managed to post a 6-0 lead at the end of the opening frame courtesy of a pair of field goals from Jimmy Stevens.
The Longhorns offense found little traction throughout the first half but managed to cut their deficit in half late in the second quarter with a Hunter Lawrence 42-yard field goal to head into the break trailing 6-3.
Texas came out in the third quarter and picked up another Lawrence field goal on their opening drive to tie the game at 6-6 and following a quick three-and-out from Oklahoma the Longhorns put together another impressive drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from McCoy to Marquise Goodwin for their first lead at 13-6. Oklahoma answered the Texas drive with an impressive march of their own and when Landry Jones, in for the injured Bradford, hit Ryan Broyles on a 35-yard strike the score was even at 13-13.
The fourth quarter opened with the Longhorns in the middle of a drive and when Lawrence connected from 32-yards out Texas jumped back in front 16-13. The Texas defense buckled down on Oklahoma and it looked like they would give the Longhorns offense a perfect opportunity to put the game away after picking off Jones deep in Oklahoma territory but McCoy tossed a pick in return. Unfortunately for the Sooners they couldn’t capitalize as Jones tossed his second interception of the game and the Longhorns managed to run the clock out.
