Shannon Briggs saw his return to the boxing ring delayed after his opponent in Saturday night’s “Phoenix Rising” card, Robert “Big Philly” Hawkins, failed his medical exam.
While Briggs won’t be facing Hawkins anytime soon he may want to consider former heavyweight WBA champ James “Lights Out” Toney who was overheard calling out the Brooklyn native. Toney, in Phoenix for the fight, directed a string of threats at Briggs during an episode that took place in the lobby of the Hilton Garden Inn Saturday evening.
According to a source inside the hotel Briggs’ publicist arrived at the front desk of the Hilton Garden Inn and asked if there were any packages for the fighter. At that time Toney, who reportedly had his hands full with Haagen Dazs ice cream and Cheetos, made a disparaging remark about Briggs.
After Toney made his comment Briggs’ publicist, unaware of who Toney was, approached him, noticed the pile of junk food and tried to ascertain his identity. When the publicist commented that he must not be one of the boxers Toney appeared to become enraged, threatening to kick Briggs’ butt right in the lobby.
With his fight already cancelled Shannon Briggs had left the hotel and was not immediately aware of the confrontation but boxing’s heavyweight division could have a great fight in the near future. Briggs has made it clear that his return to the ring is for one reason only and that is to unify the belts of the heavyweight division and a bout with Toney would be a tremendous step in reaching that goal.
