Two aid workers kidnapped while working in Sudan’s Darfur region have been freed after more than three months in captivity.
The women were working for the Irish charity GOAL when they were taken by gunmen in July. While the kidnappers reportedly demanded a $2 million ransom for the safe release of Irish citizen Sharon Commins, 32, and Ugandan citizen Hilda Kawuki, 42, the Sudanese government said not money was exchanged for their freedom.
According to a spokesman for the government the women were released after local tribe leaders put pressure on the kidnappers.
After their release on Sunday morning Commins and Kawuki released a joint statement through GOAL saying they were “naturally thrilled to be released after such a long period in captivity.” They went on to say, “We know it must have been a traumatic period for our families especially and for our friends. It was of course, a difficult time - but we found strength in each other and in our friendship.”
