AP Top 25 College Football Rankings Week 7: Alabama Crimson Tide New #1 as Florida Gators Drop to #2, USC Trojans Back in National Title Chase
For the past several weeks the Alabama Crimson Tide have been called the best college football team and on Sunday they finally earned that ranking after taking over the top spot in the AP Top 25 rankings. The Crimson Tide were bumped up from #2 after an impressive win over South Carolina and a lackluster performance from the Florida Gators.
The Gators had been the #1 team in the AP Top 25 for the entire year and while they managed to escape with a win over Arkansas on Saturday the voters weren’t impressed and it cost Florida. The reality is that Florida still controls its destiny and could be facing Alabama in the SEC championship game later this year with the winner getting a berth in the BCS national title game.
Texas held on to their #3 spot this week after edging the Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns are also in a great position to reach the BCS national title game and if they manage to win-out and take the Big 12 title they shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
As they do every year, the USC Trojans are right back in the mix for a national title and after knocking off Notre Dame in South Bend they jumped from #6 up to #4 in the AP Top 25 rankings. The Trojans are the highest ranked one-loss team and are ranked higher than four teams that haven’t lost yet.
Cracking the top five this week are the Cincinnati Bearcats who still have national title aspirations. Cincinnati jumped from #8 last week to #5 this week and if they manage to make their way through the Big East unbeaten they could find themselves in the BCS title game.
