The Florida Gators may have seen their ranking slip in the AP Top 25 but that meant little to the team as the first installment of the BCS Rankings were revealed on Sunday and the defending national champions earned the top spot, just ahead of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama just leapfrogged Florida in the AP Top 25 to claim the top spot after an impressive win over South Carolina on Saturday while the Gators just got by the Arkansas Razorbacks. While the Tide now sit at #2 in the BCS Rankings they still control their fate as an SEC title would almost certainly earn them a spot in the BCS national championship game.
Sitting in at #3 in the BCS Rankings are the Texas Longhorns who survived a tough test against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. Texas would also be a favorite to play for the national championship if they could finish the year as the Big 12 champions.
Perhaps surprising to many the Boise State Broncos opened at the #4 spot in the BCS Rankings, a clear sign that they may just get a shot at playing for the national championship. Many thought their schedule would have cost them but the Broncos are in great shape to run the table and if a few teams slip they could have their shot.
The BCS Rankings clearly favored the unbeatens as the Cincinnati Bearcats and Iowa Hawkeyes landed in at #5 and #6, just ahead of the UCS Trojans. In the most recent AP Top 25 rankings the Trojans were placed at #4, ahead of Boise State, Cincinnati and Iowa but in the BCS Rankings USC paid the price for an early season loss.
TCU is the only unbeaten to land below the Trojans but at #8 they could still challenge for a BCS bowl berth. They could also be a casualty of the BCS commitment to conferences and not earn an at-large invitation.
