Two Colorado organizations, Freedom Service Dogs of America (FSD) and Kyjen Pet Products, have just teamed up to produce smarter, happier dogs in 2013. FSD rescues shelter dogs and custom trains them to become service dogs for people with disabilities. Kyjen’s products challenge dogs’ minds and keep them active. Together, the two are providing greater stimulation and environmental enrichment for the dogs that are rescued and brought to the FSD campus for service dog training.
Unlike most service dog organizations, FSD will pull its dogs through close working relations with not only local Colorado shelters and rescues, but also organizations nationwide. The dogs will then spend the next 6 – 12 months learning up to 50 different commands, including opening doors, retrieving items, pulling wheelchairs, going for help, turning on lights and enhancing social interaction. Throughout their stay at FSD, Kyjen products ensure the dogs are occupied with toys and games that are designed to enrich and enhance their lives.
