Muppets Co-Creator Jane Henson Dies At 78

Jane Henson, who helped her husband Jim Henson create The Muppets, has died. The Jim Henson Co. confirmed Jane passed away Tuesday at her Connecticut home after a “long battle with cancer.” No other details were released. Jane was 78.

Jane and Jim met in the mid 50s at a puppetry class at the University of Maryland. Together they created The Muppets, a team of puppets that appeared on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, and later in films like The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets From Space, and 2011’s The Muppets. Well known Muppet characters include Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Big Bird, Fozzie Bear, Bert, Earnie and Elmo.  

The Hensons wed in 1959 and had five children together - Lisa, Cheryl, Brian, John and Heather. They split in 1986. Four years later, Jim died of pneumonia at the age of 53.
