The parents of Falcon Heene, dubbed Balloon Boy by the
media after he was believed to have floated away in a homemade balloon
aircraft, is set to turn themselves in to Colorado authorities. Larimer County Sheriff
Jim Alderden says the story of Falcon being in the balloon was a hoax
created by his parents, who hoped to land a reality show from the story.
“It has been determined this was a hoax. It was a
publicity stunt,” Alderden said Sunday.
The hoax unfolded last Thursday when the Heene family’s
homemade Mylar balloon was set adrift. Richard and Mayumi Heene called
authorities saying Falcon, 6, was inside. One of Falcon’s siblings told police
he saw his brother get inside the balloon and untie the rope that anchored it
to their home.
The balloon floated away, reaching about 7,000 feet
before it landed. Police didn’t find the boy inside the balloon and feared he
could have fallen out. A ground search was launched and Falcon was later found in
the family’s attic.
Falcon then gave his parents away during a live interview
on CNN’s Larry King Live. In the interview with Wolf Blitzer, who was filling
in for King, the Heenes asked Falcon why he didn’t come out of the attic when
they called his name.
“You guys said we did this for the show,” he said.
Richard and Mayumi Heene could be charged with two
felonies, conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. An attorney
for the couple says they wish to avoid “the public spectacle and humiliation”
of being arrested in front of their 3 sons, so they will turn themselves in
when the time comes.
