Afghan Presidential Election Heading to Second Round after President Hamid Karzai Stripped of Outright Win

Afghanistan’s presidential election will head to a second round after a panel determined that President Hamid Karzai did not secure a large enough majority to win outright.

The panel said that while the initial results of the election showed Karzai to have won with more than 50 percent of the vote many of those ballots were ruled fraudulent, thus discounted in the official tally.

As a result of wide-spread fraud the UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission said that ballots from 210 polling stations would be tossed, opening the door for a runoff that will pit Karzai against his closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah.

Karzai has been a vocal critic of the ECC, saying the commission was heavily influenced by Western powers who were trying to rob him of victory. Following initial results Karzai was credited with 55 percent of the vote but Abdullah instantly claimed fraud and international observers agreed that the election should be reviewed.

In their findings the ECC concluded that there had been “clear and convincing evidence of fraud” from across the country. While the ECC has declared a run-off is in order the official word will have to come from the Independent Election Commission, a body considered to be pro-Karzai. Despite the IEC’s leanings it is legally bound to accept the ECC’s findings.
