Christopher Abbott Quits HBO’s Girls

It looks like it’s over for good for Girls characters Marnie and Charlie. On the season two finale, the on-and-off couple was ready to settle down together, but now with the departure of actor Christopher Abbott, the romance will have to come to a permanent end. Abbott confirmed Thursday he will not return for season 3 of Girls.

“[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd Apatow and the entire ‘Girls’ cast and crew, but right now he’s working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show,” his rep told the New York Post.

Allison Williams, who plays Marnie, has not commented.

According to insiders, Abbott’s decision to leave is not surprising as he has been at odds with Girls creator and co-star Lena Dunham over the direction of his character. "Chris was reluctant to do the show from the get go. He's a really great actor, the source material from the beginning was great and he was grateful to Lena. But he's at a point now where he has too many great film parts being offered to him to turn them down for something he's not 100 percent satisfied with," claims an insider. "He feels good about his decision."

"He's sure the show will continue to do well, but as far as his character, he wasn't behind where it was going to end up,” adds a source.
