Magic Johnson didn’t hesitate to embrace his son’s sexuality. The former L.A. Lakers star reveals 20-year-old Earvin Johnson III came out to the family about six or seven years ago.
"I told him, 'Hey, we are here to support you, man. We're going to love you no matter who you are, what you do. We just want you to love yourself,'" Johnson tells TMZ.com.
At the time, E.J. had already shared his feelings with two close friends. Johnson says he asked E.J., "What do you think about what your friends and [other] people are going to say once you tell them? Or have you told anybody?"
When it came time to be open about his sexuality with everyone else, E.J. was “torn.” He finally decided to make a public appearance with his boyfriend. The two were spotted walking hand in hand on the Sunset Strip this week.
“I think he really wanted to be out. But he was torn. ... He just didn't know how. He just said, 'This is my moment. This is my time. I'm happy to share with the world who I am.' And I said, 'Go, E.J., go,’” Johnson reveals.
"This is a good moment for us as a family, and a greater moment for him. Now he's just the bubbly kid we knew again. ... I'm behind him a million percent. This is really wonderful for him,” he adds.
E.J. is Johnson’s oldest child with wife Cookie. The couple is also parents to 18-year-old daughter Elisa. Johnson is dad of 32-year-old son Andre from his relationship with Melissa Mitchell.
