The Pakistani army has continued its push into South Waziristan in an effort to rid the area of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants. According to reports the push, which began on Saturday morning, has resulted in several strategic positions being captured by the army.
At last 78 militants have been killed in the Pakistani offensive while nine soldiers are said to have died. Those numbers have been disputed by the Taliban which has said they have killed several more than the nine soldiers reported.
As many as 28,000 soldiers are part of the Pakistani offensive and they are believed to be receiving support from several paramilitary forces from tribal areas. They are facing as many as 20,000 militants fighting for the Taliban.
The Islamic militants have used South Waziristan as a safe haven for several years, often using the area to train fighters who then carry out attacks in Afghanistan as well as in Pakistan.
Those training practices could be severely disrupted though as the Pakistani army has gained control of the Ingalmall mountain range, a key passage into Afghanistan. The Taliban has used the mountain range as a secure means of bringing in weapons and now they could face a serious problem in their defense against the army fire.
