A gunman is in critical condition in central Serbia following a shooting rampage that left 13 people dead. According to reports, 60-year-old Ljubisa Bogdanovic shot and killed his mother and son just before dawn Tuesday in the town of Velika Ivanca, and then went house to house shooting anyone inside. The motive remains unclear.
In all, 13 people in 5 houses died. The dead include six men, six women and a 2-year-old boy. Police Chief Milorad Veljovic said most the victims were asleep when they were shot. "The most harrowing scene discovered by police was the dead bodies of a young mother and her two-year-old son,” Veljovic told reporters.
Bogdanovic, a Serb-Croat War veteran, attempted to kill his wife and himself after the shooting spree. They are both being treated at a hospital in the capital of Belgrade, which is located about 30 miles from Velika Ivanca. A woman wounded in the shooting is also being treated at the hospital.
Velika Ivanca resident Radovan Radosavljevic was shocked that Bogdanovic was the shooter. "He was a good neighbor and anyone would open their doors to him. I don't know what happened,” Radosavljevic said.
The shooting is Serbia’s deadliest since the end of the Balkan wars.
