Workshop Provides Answers to College Admissions and Financial Aid Questions

With the ever-increasing complexities of the college admissions process and the annual increases in college tuition and fees, both parents and high school students in the Northern New Jersey and New York areas often have a multitude of questions. Many wonder how to find the right college and what it will take to get into the school of their choice. Others have concerns about how they will afford the expenses associated with college. Fortunately, the Jewish Community Center of Rockland County in West Nyack, N.Y. will host a workshop presented by Janet Loren, of Pearl Glassman Educational Counseling with her partners, Steven Sirot and David Slater from the College Benefits Research Group. These professionals have more than 15 years of experience providing families with guidance, strategies, and support while they go through the journey of college admissions and the financial aid process.

Parents and students often wonder how the college admissions officers use the information in the college applications to make decisions about which applicants to admit into the school. Parents and students will learn what are the essential components of the college application as well as how to navigate the college admissions and financial aid processes. One part of the process that always induces stress is the standardized tests, such as the ACT and SAT, which are used by many college admissions offices to screen students. In addition to providing an overview of strategies students can use to score well on these tests, the presenters will also answer common questions about applications, essays, financial aid forms, merit aid and campus visits.

Since the cost of a college education has risen exponentially during the past 20 years, many parents and students find that the money they have saved is not sufficient to cover the cost of four years of college. For these parents and students, the presenters will provide an overview of the financial aid process, which will include the types of financial aid available, the timeline for applying for financial aid, and the process for both public and private school. They will also debunk many of the myths concerning the financial aid process during this workshop.

This college admissions and financial aid seminar will take place on April 30, 2013 at 7:00pm to 8:30 pm at the JCC of Rockland County facility located at 450 West Nyack Road, West Nyack, N.Y. Call (845) 362-4400 if you need additional information.
