Afghanistan will have a presidential election run-off on November 7 following the findings of a UN-backed panel that determined the original results displayed clear evidence of fraud.
President Hamid Karzai was declared the winner of the first round and his 55 percent vote was enough to avoid a second round but opponents instantly claimed the election had been rigged. The Electoral Complaints Commission, backed by the UN, looked into the claims and found evidence of fraud in more than 200 polling stations.
Karzai admitted that fraud had been present in the election yet declared it to be fair and then accused Western powers of attempting to influence the results. The president eventually relented and accepted the findings of the ECC, saying he would move forward with the run-off.
Karzai’s closest rival, Abdullah Abdullah said the decision to hold a run-off would “help democracy in this country and strengthen the faith of the people in the democratic process.”
While Abdullah’s assertions may be true there are still concerns surrounding the country’s ability to ensure the runoff is secure. Because of that concern there is still a possibility that Karzai and Abdullah could form a unity government, thus eliminating the need for a run-off.
