Frank Bank, the actor who played Clarence "Lumpy" Rutherford on Leave It to Beaver, died over the weekend. Bank’s cause of death has not been revealed. He died Saturday, one day after turning 71-years-old. No other details were immediately available.
Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver, paid tribute to Bank on Facebook. "I was so sad to hear today of the passing of my dear friend and business associate Frank Bank, who played Lumpy on Leave it to Beaver. He was a character and always kept us laughing. My deepest condolences to Frank's family,” he wrote on Saturday.
Bank made his acting debut in the 1950 film Cargo to Capetown. Two years later he played a young Will Rogers in The Story of Will Rogers. Bank landed the role of Lumpy in 1958 and remained on the show until its end in 1963. He then left acting to become a bond broker. Bank returned to acting in the 80s to appear as Lumpy in the TV movie Still The Beaver and the TV show The New Leave It To Beaver. He also made appearances on Hollywood Squares and Family Feud. In 2002, Bank’s autobiography “Call Me Lumpy: My Leave It To Beaver Days and Other Wild Hollywood Life” was published.
Bank is survived by his second wife, Rebecca, and two children from his first marriage.
