U.S. Authorities Arrest Boston Man on Terrorism Charges

U.S. authorities have arrested a 27-year-old man and charged him with a number of offenses related to terrorism including a plot to attack a shopping center and a plan to assassinate two U.S politicians.

The decision to arrest Tarek Mehanna at his home in the Boston suburb of Sudbury was made after the U.S. Justice Department determined a conspiracy case could be made. Mehanna stands accused of conspiring with at least two other men to secure several automatic weapons to carry out the mall attack.

According to prosecutors Mehanna and his co-conspirators held several discussions related to the mall attack including the coordination and scale of such an attack. Authorities said the planned mall attack was abandoned only after the men failed to secure the necessary weapons.

U.S. Attorney Michael Loucks described the severity of the alleged crimes saying the men, “discussed their desire to participate in violent jihad against American interests and that they would talk about fighting jihad and their desire to die on the battlefield.”
