Poland Agrees to Take Part in Revised U.S. Missile Defense Plan

Poland has agreed to take part in a revised U.S. missile defense plan that will allow a small base to house short-range missiles within the country.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his country was “ready to participate” following a meeting with U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. The new missile defense plan is significantly scaled back from the original plan designed under former President George Bush. That plan, agreed upon by Poland, was scrapped by President Obama after pressure from Russia.

According to Obama the original plan did not address the current concerns facing the region. Those concerns included the weapons capability of rogue states including Iran.

Biden said the new plan would provide “better security for Poland” and stated, “It's going to meet it with proven technology that will cover more of Europe, including Poland, and will do it more efficiently than the previous system could have or did.”

The new plan could be in operation by 2015.
