NBA All-Star Weekend kicked off with the Rookie Challenge and New York Knicks sensational sophomore David Lee found the night to be anything but a challenge. Lee showed his NBA siblings why he was the league’s leading shooter with a 14-14 performance en route to 30 points and the games MVP honors as the sophomores beat the rookies 155-114.
Lee’s performance was so dominant Chris Paul’s efforts were merely a sideshow. The second year man from the NO/Oklahoma City Hornets finished with 16 points, 17 assists and 9 steals.
With defense taking the night off the sophomore squad shot nearly 75 percent from the field and set a game record for points, eclipsing the 2004 game in which the second year players totaled 142 points.
Golden State Warriors guard Monte Ellis added the aerial show for the sophs as he scored 28 points on a series of alley-oops and thunderous dunks.
While the rookies did get hammered and trailed by as many as 43 points in the contest there were some strong performances. Rudy Gay and Paul Millsap each scored 22 points and Adam Morrison finished with 16 points on the night.
