Tyler Hansbrough scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to give the #4 North Carolina Tar Heels (23-4) a 77-72 victory over the #21 Boston College Eagles (18-8).
As is often the case in close games the outcome was determined at the free-throw line. North Carolina was able to convert 16-20 from the charity stripe while Boston College shot a miserable 11-21.
The Eagles has a chance to tie the score late in the game but Jared Dudley missed all three free-throw attempts after being fouled on a three-point attempt.
North Carolina got a big game from Ty Lawson who scored 13 points, handed out 7 assists and grabbed 6 boards.
The Tar Heels built a 25-18 lead midway through the first half but Boston College answered with an 13-5 run and grabbed the lead. The Tar Heels then closed the half on a 14-7 spurt and went into the break with a 44-38 lead.
Boston College was even with the Tar Heels 61-61 in the second half but North Carolina once again responded with a 12-5 run and established breathing room. B.C. still had a chance with the score 76-73 and 10 seconds left in the game but Dudley missed a three-pointer. Lawson then sealed the game for the Tar Heels with a pair of free-throws
Dudley finished with 22 points for the Eagles and Tyrese Rice added 20 in the loss.
All five starters scored in double figures for the Tar Heels as they moved to 9-3 in the ACC and took over first place in the conference. Boston College fell to 9-4 in the ACC.
