Ethiopian Government Makes International Appeal for Food Aid

The Ethiopian government has made an international appeal for emergency food aid after declaring its more than six million citizens are facing a devastating crisis as the region continues to suffer from a prolonged draught.

According to the United Nations’ World Food Program more than $285 million will be needed over the next six months to provide relief. Much of that money would go to not only providing immediate relief but also to implement programs that would assist in preventing and dealing with food shortages.

Those programs would include proper irrigation for crops, grain stores and wells to collect rain.

Aid agencies have said that while the weather has been a major contributor to the countries poor harvests over the past four years other factors such as conflict and population growth have also played a role.
