Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) said Thursday that its third-quarter net profit slipped 3.2% to $455.2 million, or $2.32 a share, from $470.3 million, or $2.41 a share, a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter fell 26% to $2.94 billion. The group said its adjusted earnings fell to $2.40 a share from $2.50 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting earnings of $2.53 a share on sales of $3.83 billion. The group said earnings in its utility, parent and other business division declined due to higher income tax expenses and higher operating and maintenance costs. In its nuclear division, earnings increased as production was boosted by fewer planned and unplanned outage days. The group reaffirmed its guidance for 2009 operational earnings in the range of $6.20 to $6.80 a share.

CONSOL Energy Inc. (NYSE:CNX)  said Thursday third-quarter net income dipped to $87.4 million, or 48 cents a share, from $90.1 million, or 49 cents a share in the year-ago period. Revenue fell to about $1.1 billion from $1.17 billion in the year-ago period. Analysts expected the Pittsburgh-based coal and gas producer to earn 67 cents a share on revenue of $1.1 billion, according to a survey by FactSet Research. The company said thermal coal sales, "have still not shown a meaningful rebound." Consol maintained its production target of 58 million tons for calendar year 2009, including 1.9 million tons of met coal. "Due to the significant fiscal spending and relaxed monetary policy in the United States, a modest recovery appears likely in the U.S. in 2010," the company said.

Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. (NYSE:DO) said Thursday third-quarter net income fell to $364.1 million, or $2.62 a share, from $310.5 million, or $2.23 a share in the year-ago period. Revenue rose slightly to $908.4 million from $900.4 million. Analysts expected the Houston oil service firm to earn $2.29 a share on revenue of $874.4 million, according to a survey of analysts by FactSet Research. Diamond Offshore also declared a special cash dividend of $1.88 a share and a regular quarterly cash dividend of 12.5 cents a share. Both dividends are payable on Dec. 1 to shareholders of record on Nov. 2.
