Ameriprise Financial, Inc. (NYSE:AMP) said it swung to a third-quarter profit of $260 million, or $1 a share, from a loss of $70 million, or 32 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 20% to $2 billion. Analysts had forecast Ameriprise to earn 64 cents a share, according to FactSet Research.

Astoria Financial Corporation (NYSE:AF)  the Lake Success, N.Y., bank-holding company with $20.7 billion of assets, swung to third-quarter net income of 9 cents a share from a year-earlier net loss of 19 cents. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced a consensus estimate of profit of 8 cents a share for the quarter.

NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) said Thursday that its third-quarter net income declined to $15 million, or 9 cents a share from $80 million, or 48 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue fell to $1.14 billion from $1.38 billion. Adjusted for one-time items, the Duluth, Ga.-based company said it would have earned 19 cents a share from continuing operations. On average, analysts polled by FactSet Research were expecting a profit of 24 cents a share. The maker of automated tellers and related technology products also lowered its 2009 forecast for adjusted earnings to a range of 45 cents to 55 cents a share, with revenue 12% to 14% lower compared to 2008. Analysts were looking for full-year earnings of 67 cents a share, according to FactSet.
