Divinyls founder and lead singer Chrissy Amphlett has lost her battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis. According to her husband Charley Drayton, the 53-year-old “succumbed to the effects” of the diseases Sunday at their home in New York City.
"Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity," Drayton, a Divinyls drummer, said in a statement.
"Chrissy's light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity. She always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength, she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women," he added.
Amphlett had been battling multiple sclerosis since 2007 and breast cancer since 2010.
The musician founded the Divinyls along with Mark EcEntee and Jeremy Paul in 1980. The Australian rock band attained international success in 1991 with the single “I Touch Myself.” The song topped the charts in Australia at No. 1, in the United States at No. 2, and in Britain at No. 10. In all, the Divinyls released 5 albums. Their last album, Underworld, was released in 1996.
Amphlett was also an actress. She played Judy Garland in the original Australian stage production of The Boy from Oz and starred opposite Russell Crowe in Blood Brothers. Amphlett appeared on the silver screen in 1982’s Monkey Grip.
