The San Diego Chargers have hired Norv Turner as their new head coach, one week after firing Marty Schottenheimer.
Replacing Schottenheimer, a man with a career regular season record of 200-126-1, with Norv Turner, a man with a career regular season record of 58-82-1, may seem odd but the San Diego Chargers have elected to hire the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator nonetheless.
Many had expected Turner to assume the Dallas Cowboys head coaching position after Bill Parcells stepped down but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones elected to go with Wade Phillips instead.
Turner has some experience with the Chargers; he was their offensive coordinator during LaDainian Tomlinson’s rookie season.
Schottenheimer was fired after leading the Chargers to a 14-2 regular season record. San Diego lost to the New England Patriots in the playoffs and after it was clear Marty would not get along with GM, A.J. Smith, he was let go.
