Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya doesn’t appear to be any closer to regaining his office after the latest round of talks with negotiators of interim leader Roberto Micheletti broke down.
Zelaya has insisted he be returned to office to finish out his term, scheduled to end in January. That proposal was presented to the interim government which rejected the idea. Despite that rejection the negotiators insisted the talks were not done but Zelaya has said otherwise.
The interim government does not want Zelaya to return to office prior to the country’s elections in November.
Zelaya was removed by force in late June following an order by the Honduran Supreme Court which found the president to have acted illegally when he attempted to hold a vote concerning the possibility of changing the country’s constitution. The interim government has accused Zelaya of attempting to change the constitution so that he could seek another term in office, a claim he has denied on a number of occasions.
While Zelaya was forced out of the country following the coup he made a surprise return in September and has been holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. Several countries have called for Zelaya’s immediate return to power yet those calls have been largely ignored by the interim government.
