Roman Polanski Facing Extradition Following U.S. Formal Request to Switzerland

Roman Polanski is facing extradition back to the United States to face charges of unlawful sex with a minor following a formal request made by authorities to Swiss officials.

Polanski has been held in Switzerland since September when he was detained by authorities while traveling to Zurich to attend a film festival. The famed director had been the subject of a U.S. warrant since he fled America in 1978 while awaiting sentencing. He had pled guilty to the charges but before he was sentenced he fled to France, a country that does not extradite citizens to foreign countries.

Polanski, 76, was born in Paris and in addition to French citizenship he holds Polish citizenship. His detention in Switzerland has been criticized by many who have demanded his release yet Swiss officials have defended their action and said they were obligated to make the arrest as the warrant was still valid.

An attempt to be released on bail was recently denied and the likelihood of Polanski being extradited appears almost certain.
