One year ago the Big 12 was the talk of college football as it boasted some of the most high-powered offenses to take the field and had a host of teams gunning for a national title but it has been a different story this year as the NFL Draft and injuries have changed the landscape. Despite all of that the Texas Longhorns still remain a serious contender for the BCS title game and Saturday could be another step towards reaching that goal.
Any early season favorite, the Oklahoma State Cowboys (5-1, 2-0) took a serious hit following their loss to Houston but they have strung together four straight wins and could still capture the Big 12 South but they’ll have the Baylor Bears (3-3, 0-2) to deal with on Saturday. Baylor has dropped their last two games but are capable of putting points on the board and if the Cowboys aren’t careful they could score the upset. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-2, 1-1) have been a difficult team to read this year as they’ve shown signs of being a solid squad but haven’t climbed over the hump to return to national prominence. They had their chance earlier this year but fell in the final minute to Virginia Tech and last week’s loss to Texas A&M was just ugly. They’ll have their chance to bounce back on Saturday when they host the Iowa State Cyclones (4-3, 1-2), a team that has been playing a lot better over the past few weeks. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
The Big 12 North has its problems and for the Kansas State Wildcats (4-3, 2-1) that’s been to their benefit as they are currently in position to find their way into the Big 12 championship. That despite the fact they have lost some ugly games to Texas Tech, UCLA and Louisiana-Lafayette. Fortunately for the Wildcats they play in the same division as the Colorado Buffalos (2-4, 1-1) who continue to sink lower and lower. Colorado did pull off an upset over Kansas last week but a road trip against Kansas State will likely result in another loss. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. ET.
The Kansas Jayhawks (5-1, 1-1) had a colossal collapse last week after falling to Colorado and they’ll have a much tougher opponent this week as they host the Oklahoma Sooners (3-3, 1-1) who just missed knocking off Texas last week. The Sooners are without Sam Bradford but are a quality team that could still find itself in a decent bowl game by the end of the year. While it’s a road test, Oklahoma should find a way to top the Jayhawks. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
In what promises to be an entertaining game the Texas Tech Red Raiders (5-2, 2-1) will be playing host to the Texas A&M Aggies (3-3, 0-2). Both losses that the Red Raiders have suffered were close games, a ten-point loss to Texas and a one-point loss to Houston, while their wins have been convincing. The Aggies haven’t been as fortunate and they’re coming off a 62-14 loss to Kansas State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET.
The Texas Longhorns (6-0, 3-0) are coming off a close call against Oklahoma last week and they could face another test on Saturday as they travel to take on the Missouri Tigers (4-2, 0-2) who will certainly be geared up for this game. Texas is on track for a BCS title game but they haven’t played Oklahoma State yet and they can’t afford a loss that could cost them the Big 12 South. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET.
