AP Top 25 College Basketball Scoreboard: #10 Pittsburgh Panthers Avoid Seton Hall Upset Bid

Levance Fields scored 15 points and Levon Kendall added 14 points and 6 rebounds in the #10 Pittsburgh Panthers (24-4) narrow 71-68 victory over the Seton Hall Pirates (12-14).

Seton Hall jumped to a 14-4 early lead early but Pittsburgh responded with a 12-2 run to tie the score midway through the first half.  From that point on the two Big East schools stayed close and the half ended with Pittsburgh holding a 30-26 advantage.

In the second half the Panthers stretched their lead to as much as 12 points but the Pirates wouldn’t go away. With 12 seconds remaining in the game Jamar Nutter hit a three-pointer for Seton Hall to bring the score to 70-68. Seton Hall fouled Fields, who then hit one of two free-throws giving the Pirates one last chance to tie the score.

With 7 seconds remaining Seton Hall turned to Nutter but his three-pointer fell short and Pittsburgh escaped the upset.

Nutter ended the night with 19 points for Seton Hall while Eugene Harvey finished with 24 points.

The win keeps Pittsburgh atop the Big East with an 11-2 record, ½ a game ahead of Georgetown. Seton Hall fell to 3-10 in the conference.
