Shiloh Pepin, known as Mermaid girl because her legs were
fused together from the waist down, has died. Pepin died Friday at Maine
Medical Center after a bad cold turned in to pneumonia. She was 10.
Shiloh was born with a condition called mermaid syndrome,
or sirenomelia. The condition is where a child is born with their legs fused
together, giving them the look of a mermaid.
Most children born with the condition have surgery to
separate their legs. Shiloh, whose story was recently featured on The Oprah
Winfrey Show, was unable to have the surgery due to blood vessels crossing from
side to side. Shiloh only had one partially working kidney and no lower colon
or genital organs.
Shiloh’s mother, Leslie Pepin, rushed her to Maine
Medical Center on October 10 with a cold that progressed rapidly in to
pneumonia. Shiloh was placed on antibiotics and a ventilator, but her organs failed.
She died October 23.
