A 15-year-old has been charged with the murder in the
death of 9-year-old Missouri girl Elizabeth Olten. Juvenile authorities said
Saturday the teen is charged with first degree murder. Police did not release
the teen’s name or gender, but did say the individual was acquainted with Elizabeth
and led them to her body.
Elizabeth disappeared Wednesday while walking home from a
friend’s house. Her body was found Friday afternoon with the help of the
suspect, who lead them to the wooded area several hundred yards from Elizabeth’s
St. Martin home. “We had been in that area – actually more than once. The body
was very well concealed,” said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.
White would not say whether police believe Elizabeth had
been killed there. Her cell phone, which was used to pin point the primary
search area until its battery died, was found near her body.
An autopsy was being conducted Saturday to determine the
time and cause of death.
Under Missouri law, children over 12 can be charged as
adults with first-degree murder. The case is required to start in the juvenile
court system. A hearing will be held on whether to transfer the child to an
adult court.
