Both the Florida Gators and Alabama Crimson Tide may just be happy their still among college football’s unbeaten after Saturday’s games and while they each escaped with a win the AP Top 25 college football rankings still found reason to shake-up the top two spots.
One week after dropping to #2 the Florida Gators moved back to #1 after knocking off the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Gators were exactly convincing in their 29-19 victory but with a good portion of their defense missing they did enough to convince voters they were the nation’s best team.
Alabama could have done a lot to cement themselves as the best team as they faced the Tennessee Volunteers but the Crimson Tide offense looked anemic and they needed a miraculous blocked field goal to earn the win. That narrow win sent the Tide down one spot to #2 this week in the AP Top 25 college football rankings.
The Texas Longhorns hold steady at #3 this week after a thumping of Big 12 rival Missouri, a team many thought could pull off the upset. After the 41-7 score was in the books it was obvious the Longhorns were legit and deserved their spot among the nation’s elite.
Once again the USC Trojans sit at #4 after a 42-36 win over Oregon State in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. The Trojans still need some help to get back to the national championship game as they haven’t been shown the love by the BCS but with time still in their favor USC is still sitting in a nice spot.
The Cincinnati Bearcats have inched closer to the Trojans for that #4 spot but they remain at #5 this week following a 41-10 blasting of Louisville on Saturday. Cincinnati still has West Virginia and Pittsburgh on their schedule and if they remain undefeated they could sneak into the title game.
Among the teams that suffered the most from Saturday’s games none took a bigger hit than the Miami Hurricanes. After climbing up to #8 last week the Hurricanes dropped to #18 following a 40-37 OT loss to Clemson. The loss could also keep Miami out of the ACC championship game as they now trail four teams in the Coastal.
Voters weren’t too impressed with BYU either as the Cougars fell from the rankings after a home loss to TCU. Kansas also dropped from the rankings after getting blasted by the Oklahoma Sooners.
