In less than 12 hours the #1 Wisconsin Badgers (26-3) were named the AP’s top team in the nation and lost to an unranked Michigan State Spartans (20-8) squad 64-55. For Wisconsin the loss wasn’t a matter of playing nervous it was a matter of being outplayed.
To be more specific it was the guard play of the Spartans that proved too much for the Badgers. Drew Neitzel scored 28 points for Michigan State and connected on 6-11 three-pointers while sophomore guard Travis Walton finished with 13 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds in the win.
Wisconsin led at the break 30-29 and were up 49-48 with less than five minutes remaining in the game but the Spartans went on a 13-2 run to knock off their first top ranked team since the 1979 NCAA Finals when they beat Indiana State.
Michigan State out-rebounded the Badgers 41-24 and blocked five shots while holding Alando Tucker to just two points in the second half. Tucker finished with 16 for the Badgers while Marcus Landry ended the night with 18.
The loss drops Wisconsin to 12-2 in the Big Ten, ½ game behind Ohio State while Michigan State improved to 7-6 in conference play and lifted their chances of an NCAA Tournament birth.
