As I Lay Dying singer Tim Lambesis was arrested in California this week for allegedly attempting to hire a hit man to murder his estranged wife. San Diego County authorities have released few details about the murder-for-hire plot. The sheriff’s department said they learned of the plot through a tip last week and launched an investigation immediately.
"The information came to us late last week. We acted quickly on it. I believe that we averted a great tragedy," said San Diego County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jan Caldwell.
Lambesis was taken into custody Tuesday in Oceanside, California after approaching an undercover detective about killing his wife, Meggan. Investigators have not commented on why the 32-year-old heavy metal musician would want Meggan dead. No other details were immediately available. Reps for Lambesis and As I Lay Dying have not commented.
Lambesis, a devout Christian, has been charged with one count of solicitation to commit murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime.
As I Lay Dying was formed in 2000 by Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancinco. In addition to Lambesis and Mancino, current members include Phil Sgrosso, Nick Hipa and Josh Gilbert. The band has released 6 studio albums. Their newest album, Awakened, was released in September 2012 and debuted at No. 11 on Billboard. As I Lay Dying received a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2008 for their single “Nothing Left.”
