Ricky Gervais will host this year’s Golden Globes awards.

The British funnyman has been named compare for the Hollywood celebration of TV and film achievement, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, next January.

Of his appointment to host the awards, ‘The Invention of Lying’ star said he is looking forward to having “free reign” as a presenter.

He said: “Not only is this the biggest Hollywood celebration of the industry which includes both film and TV, but also an environment where I feel I can get free reign as a host.

“I have resisted many other offers like this, but there are just some things you don't turn down.”

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will take place in the US on January 17, 2010.

The decision to let him host comes just a year after he stunned attendees at the 2009 ceremony into silence with a joke about the holocaust.

Ricky had made a gaffe when presenting an award to actress Kate Winslet for her film ‘The Reader’ – in which she played a concentration camp guard - at the awards in January.

He told her: “Well done Winslet. I told you, do a Holocaust movie and the awards come, didn't I?”

The joke was in reference to a monologue he wrote for the actress in his comedy series ‘Extras’ in which she delivers a monologue saying acting in a film about the holocaust would guarantee her an Oscar.

He added: "Trouble with Holocaust films is there's never any gag reel on the DVDs.”
