Former Bosnian Serb Leader Radovan Karadzic Pushed for Ethnic Cleansing According to Prosecutors

The trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic picked up on Tuesday despite the accused opting to boycott the proceedings at The Hague for the second straight day.

Prosecutors wasted little time in labeling Karadzic as the leader of an ethnic cleansing campaign during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. During opening remarks prosecutors said Karadzic “harnessed the forces of nationalism, hatred and fear” in his efforts to create a Bosnia free of Muslims.

Karadzic is currently facing charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity and while he has refused to enter a plea in the case he has maintained his innocence. The 64-year-old Karadzic has said he needs at least nine more months to prepare for his defense as he is representing himself.

Despite Karadzic’s absence prosecutors held little back in describing the former Serbian Democratic Party head as a monster. Alain Tieger, lead prosecutor in the case, said “In the course of conquering the territory that he claimed for the Serbs, his forces killed thousands of Bosnian Muslims and Croats, imprisoned thousands more in squalid and brutal camps and detention facilities, and forced hundreds of thousands away from their homes.”

Karadzic is not scheduled to deliver his opening remarks for another week but the judge in the case may still appoint a lawyer to represent him if he continues to boycott the proceedings.
