NBA Scores: Boston Celtics Balanced Attack Too Much for LeBron James and Cleveland Cavaliers in Season Opener

Paul Pierce scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Rajon Rondo added 8 points and 10 assists and Kevin Garnett finished with 13 points and 10 boards as the Boston Celtics opened their season with an impressive 95-89 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland opened strong as they built a 19-5 advantage in the first six minutes of the game but Boston worked their way back and trimmed cut their deficit to 28-21 at the end of the frame. The Cavaliers continued to hold a lead midway through the second but Rasheed Wallace managed to pull the Celtics even with a three-pointer with 7:48 left in the half and Pierce finally gave them their first lead after  burying a triple of his own with 4:54 on the clock. LeBron James put the Cavs back in front 45-44 after sinking one of two from the free-throw line but Boston closed the half on a 7-0 run to claim a 51-45 lead at the break.

Boston quickly took control of the game in the third as they opened with an 11-2 run to push their lead to 62-47. The Celtics kept that double-digit lead for most of the frame but LeBron scored the final four points of the quarter to get the Cavaliers within 72-65 heading into the fourth. The Celtics once again pushed their advantage to double-digits but a nearly five-minute scoreless spell allowed the Cavaliers to get back to within 80-76 with 5:43 left in the game. LeBron kept the Cavs within four after sinking a pair from the line at the two-minute mark but a pair of jumpers from Paul Pierce put Boston in front 91-83 with 30 seconds left and the Cavs had no answer.
