Brandon Roy scored 20 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dealt 5 assists, Travis Outlaw added 23 points and Greg Oden finished with 12 boards as the Portland Trail Blazers opened the season with a 96-87 home win over the Houston Rockets on Tuesday evening.
After playing to a 23-23 tie at the close of one quarter the Trail Blazers grabbed control of the game with an 11-0 run to start the second frame. Shane Battier was able to get the Rockets back to within 37-30 after burying three-pointer but Portland used a 9-0 spurt to build a 16-point cushion and ended the half in front 54-41.
Portland continued to control the game through the third quarter and managed to push their advantage up to 75-55 following a Travis Outlaw triple with less than a minute left in the frame. Houston put together a 9-0 run of their own in the fourth quarter to get as close as 80-71 but Andre Miller hit a 16-footer and followed that with a triple to push the Blazers advantage back up to 85-71 and the Rockets had no answer.
Aaron Brooks led the Rockets with 19 points in the loss but was 0-6 from beyond the arch and as a team Houston was just 5-18 from that distance.
