Just when the Miami Heat were putting the pieces back together to make a run at another NBA Championship their team leader went down. It was supposed to be a celebratory night for Miami fans as head coach Pat Riley returned after a nearly seven week absence to recover from hip replacement surgery.
With Riley back and Shaquille O’Neal regaining shape after missing 40 games it looked as if Miami would become the favorite to come out of the Eastern Conference. That all changed when Dwyane Wade attempted to steal the ball from Houston’s Shane Battier in the fourth quarter and injured his left shoulder.
Wade was in so much pain that he had to be taken off the floor in a wheelchair. The timing couldn’t have been any worse for the Heat who had won seven of their last eight heading into the Houston game. The loss of their floor general puts Miami in a desperate situation to find a guard who will take over his role.
After falling to the Houston Rockets 112-102 the Miami Heat announced that Wade would not be accompanying them to Dallas to take on the Mavericks. The NBA All-Star was taken to a Houston hospital to have his injury diagnosed.
