After 7 years of hosting SNL’s Weekend Update, Seth Meyers is graduating to Late Night. NBC confirmed Meyers will replace Jimmy Fallon as host of late night next year when Fallon moves to The Tonight Show. Meyers’ new gig was announced Sunday.
"We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation. His years at SNL's 'Weekend Update' desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the Late Night franchise," NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt said in a statement.
"12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. I hope I can do it justice,” Meyers said.
Meyers, 39, has served as a Saturday Night Live head writer for 8 seasons. He has also appeared in films like New Year’s Eve, I Don’t Know How She Does It and Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
Fallon was announced as Jay Leno’s Tonight Show replacement last month. “Jimmy Fallon is a unique talent and this is his time. I’m thrilled he will become the sixth host of ‘The Tonight Show’ at exactly the right moment, in conjunction with our coverage of next year’s Winter Olympic Games from Sochi, Russia,” NBC Universal CEO Steve Burke said at the time.
“Congratulations Jimmy,” Leno said in a statement. “I hope you’re as lucky as me and hold on to the job until you’re the old guy. If you need me, I’ll be at the garage.”
