Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights Dr. Tish Taylor, Ph.D.

Leewood, KS – Even young children and adolescents can develop psychological issues that require the support of therapy. From anxiety to depression to trouble paying attention in school, it’s critically important these issues are addressed to prevent future emotional difficulties.

Dr. Tish Taylor is a licensed psychologist and educational consultant, specializing in child and adolescent therapy and educational evaluations. Driven by a desire to make a difference, Dr. Taylor’s primary goal is to facilitate the positive development of children and adolescents both at home and in the classroom.

“It’s just where my passion is. I love kids,” says Dr. Taylor. “I enjoy working with them and I want to make a difference early. It makes sense to me that if you can deal with issues earlier, the trajectory for functioning into adulthood is much better.”

Dr. Taylor works with children, adolescents and their families to identify goals to improve functioning. Once these goals are identified, Dr. Taylor can develop lessons and activities children can connect with to encourage more effective coping skills. She also works with parents on how to communicate better with their child, so they can help follow through on these skills.

“I like the children to leave with ideas and tools to take with them to begin to understand what they can do differently,” says Dr. Taylor. “It’s about helping them to understand their emotions, their emotional reactions and their behaviors.”

While most clinical practitioners don’t come from an educational background, prior to establishing her private practice, Dr. Taylor had been a school psychologist for 11 years and spent an additional three years as the district’s mental health counselor. Today, Dr. Taylor provides educational seminars for parents and professionals as well as consultation services to help teachers understand how to manage these issues in the classroom.

“Teachers deal with so much throughout the day,” says Dr. Taylor. “It’s essential that they have these simple tools at their disposal.”

Dr. Taylor administers evaluations for learning disorders, attention deficit disorders, executive functioning issues, autism spectrum disorders and any anxiety-related behavioral or emotional issues. The purpose of these evaluations is to determine skills and abilities in major areas of development and to provide recommendations for improved functioning.

“It takes a lot of courage for parents to take that step for their children,” says Dr. Taylor. “Part of the job is done just by being here. The sole mission is to make the family’s lives better.”
