2013 Doctor of the Year, Dr. Karen Cieslewicz Returns to Close-Up Talk Radio
Rockville, MD – Close-Up Talk Radio is proud to announce the return of Dr. Karen Cieslewicz, recipient of the 2013 Doctor of The Year Award. With what appears to be an alarming rise in disastrous events facing the modern world, there are those who by natural instinct run from disaster… and then there are people like Dr. Karen Cieslewicz.
From an early age, Karen developed a strong passion for helping people. “I always wanted to be a doctor and I truly wanted to be the best doctor I could possibly be,” exclaims Cieslewicz.
She executed this desire and pursued a career in healthcare earning her MD at Ross University School of Medicine. On September 11th 2001, Karen was working as a research assistant in a vascular surgery department. One of the most brutal and tragic events in the history of mankind brought out some of the most heroic acts we may ever see. First responders from all over put their own safety aside and rushed to the aid of all of those trapped in this horrific situation.
“9/11 was a wake-up call to the entire medical community. We had a response that previously we followed but had never seen such mass trauma and casualty here in the U.S. It changed my entire outlook on what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.”
Karen immersed herself in the many aspects of disaster relief and went on to her earn her Master’s degree in Homeland Security and Emergency Management from American Public University and is an Inaugural Scholar, Disaster Science Fellow and Certified Emergency Manager.
After earning her degree and certification, Karen knew that the best tool for gaining knowledge is through experience. Without hesitation, Karen dove headfirst into the relief efforts for such recent events as Hurricane Isaac, National Security Events, and the earthquake of 2010 in Haiti. “From response, relief, to rebuilding; you need to act fast. When you see the devastation and the human element in those situations, it affects you.”
Karen’s drive and experience has earned her immense respect among her peers and all of those involved in homeland security and emergency management, as she’s a Subject Matter Expert in these areas.
Karen is a deeply compassionate and motivated individual who yearns to share her knowledge with everyone eager to learn and step up in disastrous situations. She has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, the Defense Medical Readiness Institute in Texas, and currently teaches at American Public University.
Through her thirst for greater knowledge and her desire to instruct, Karen has traveled the world learning the different systems of homeland security and emergency management in a variety of other countries.
“It’s important to constantly interact with other systems and to share our system to see what works best and what can be improved. What I try to stress to my students is thinking outside of the box. Critical thinking skills are extremely important.”
Along with all of the aforementioned responsibilities Karen has taken on, she runs her own successful private practice as a licensed physician and surgeon in Maryland.
