World Series Game One: New York Yankees Host Philadelphia Phillies in Fall Classic Opener Wednesday

The New York Yankees will be hosting the Philadelphia Phillies in game one of the World Series on Wednesday evening with the first pitch scheduled for 7:57 p.m. ET.

CC Sabathia will be delivering that pitch for the Yankees as the big left-hander gets the nod from manager Joe Girardi to start the series. Sabathia has sparkled in the postseason, picking up wins in all three of his starts and posting a 1.19 ERA in 22.2 innings.

Sabathia will have his hands full as he faces an imposing Phillies line-up that includes Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino and Raul Ibanez. The lefty will also have to deal with a red-hot Carlos Ruiz who has had a tremendous postseason.

As tough as Sabathia may have it, it won’t be any easier for Phillies starter Cliff Lee. While Lee has been dominant in the postseason, posting a 2-0 record with a 0.74 ERA over 24.1 innings, he’ll have to deal with a Yankees lineup that includes perhaps the hottest hitter in the game, Alex Rodriguez.

Rodriguez has plenty of bats around him as Derek Jeter, Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira make it difficult for opposing pitchers to work around any one hitter.

Both Sabathia and Lee have been workhorses in the postseason and will be counted on to pitch deep into the game on Wednesday. New York has had some trouble with their middle relief and would like to shorten the time before Mariano Rivera gets the ball while Philadelphia has had strong relief efforts but questions surrounding closer Brad Lidge remain.
