The #7 Memphis Tigers (24-3) allowed the Rice Owls (13-13) to hang around for the first ten minutes of the opening half before blowing their doors off 99-63 to win the Conference USA Title for the second consecutive season.
With just over eight minutes remaining in the first half the Tigers exploded on a 28-14 run to close the half and went into the locker room with a 52-34 advantage. Unfortunately for the Owls the second half was nothing short of a massacre. Memphis continued to pour it on and put together a 12-0 run midway through the half to take an 87-53 lead.
Willie Kemp led the Tigers offense with 20 points while Robert Dozier added 10 points to go with his 7 rebounds. Joey Dorsey had a strong game for the Tigers as well, the forward finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 7 blocked shots. Memphis shot 55 percent from the floor and were 15-32 from beyond the three-point line.
