Window Socket Solar Charger, A Poor Choice For Smartphones

Window Socket Solar Charger, A Poor Choice For Smartphones

There has been widespread interest about a new invention that has been gaining attention on social media recently. The Window Socket Solar Charger, a prototype that sticks to windows and claims to provide instant power for smartphones and other rechargeable devices.

The Window Socket Portable Solar Charger was created by Kyuho Song and Boa Oh of Korea, they claim the device provides enough energy to charge a cell phone by sticking a solar cell to a window.

The prototype uses small solar cells to trickle charge into internal batteries, it does not provide enough current for a direct charge, but over a course of a few weeks will fully charge its 1000mA internal battery which is enough to fully charge one smartphone.

Combined with the use of low current solar cells, it must charge through UV protected or thick glass windows, cutting solar charging efficiency by 80%, so the window solar charger may take weeks to charge just one smartphone.

(Plus from the looks of the conceptual graphics of the socket charger, it doesn't have a light indicator telling the user that it's fully charged and ready to use.)

Not to say it won't work in solar charging a smartphone, but it's not a solar charger that provides instant gratification. However, a portable solar energy company called Suntactics provides portable solar chargers that will power smartphones, tablets and other portable USB devices, instantly.

Trickle battery chargers like the window socket charger forces the user to wait a day, or in this case, even a week to charge one smartphone.
