Noble Energy, Inc. (NYSE:NBL) jumped up 3.20% to $69.07 after it said Thursday that third-quarter earnings were $107 million, or 61 cents a share, compared to $974 million, or $5.37 a share, in the same period a year ago. Adjusted earnings were $1.10 versus $2.08 a share. Revenue in the period fell to $621 million compared to $1.1 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research estimated, on average, earnings per share of 81 cents and sales of $676 million.

Xcel Energy Inc. (NYSE:XEL) trading flat after it reported third-quarter net income of $220.8 million, or 48 cents a share, down a bit from the year-ago period's earnings of $222.8 million, or 51 cents a share. "Lower sales resulting from unseasonably cool temperatures, as well as an increase in our overall effective tax rate reduced our earnings," said Chief Executive Richard Kelly. Third-quarter revenue fell to $2.31 billion from $2.85 billion. Xcel Energy said it expects full-year earnings near the midpoint of its outlook, which is in the range of $1.45 and $1.55 a share.

Cincinnati Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:CINF) climbed 1% to $25.44 after it its third-quarter profit fell 31%, to $171 million, or $1.05 a share, compared to $$247 million, or $1.50 a share last year. Revenue fell 15%, to $.101 billion, from $1.19 billion last year. Operating income at the company rose 30%, to $96 million, or 59 cents a share, compared to $74 million, or 45 cents a share last year. Analysts polled by FactSet Research had expected the company to earn 42 cents a share.
